In extraordinarily general terms, there are three basic game plans employed. You need to be able to hop between strategies almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious calamity taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It would be played when you are decidedly behind as this plan much improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
