Backgammon – 3 General Schemes

In astonishingly general terms, there are three fundamental plans used. You must be able to hop between game plans quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your competitor rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in serious dire straits due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at least 2 of your pieces.) It should be played when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
