In very simple terms, there are 3 main techniques used. You must be able to switch game plans quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to block in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is now in big-time difficulty seeing that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It should be used when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, seeing that you don’t have other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
